Is it a watering problem? Excess fertilization? Perhaps a change in temperature or humidity? Determining the cause isn’t always simple, but observing certain signs can help identify what’s going on.

While some leaves may dry out naturally at certain stages of growth, when the problem becomes widespread or appears in excess, it is usually a sign that something is out of balance. But how do expert growers identify exactly what’s going wrong and what’s the solution?

Main causes of leaf drying

Irrigation-related problems

One of the most common reasons for drying of cannabis leaves is improper water management. For example, when the plant receives too little water, it enters into what is known as water stress, i.e. it does not have enough moisture to perform basic functions such as photosynthesis. This results in dry, brittle leaves with brown tips that are often quickly evident. In contrast, overwatering also causes damage, generating anaerobic conditions (lack of oxygen) that prevent proper nutrient absorption, resulting in yellowing or browning leaves that eventually dry out.

A common way to detect watering problems is to assess substrate moisture directly. Plunging a finger into the soil to a depth of two to three centimeters can indicate whether the substrate is still holding moisture or if it is too dry. Moisture meters are also available to give an accurate reading. In addition, observing the weight of the pot can be an additional reference, as a light pot usually indicates dryness, while one that is too heavy suggests water accumulation. Using a combination of these methods helps to make more accurate watering decisions.

Burns due to excessive fertilization

Excess nutrients can also be a major cause of leaf drying. When too much fertilizer is applied, especially rich in nitrogen, phosphorus or potassium, the plant cannot properly absorb these substances and a toxic build-up occurs in the substrate. This phenomenon initially manifests itself as a burning at the tips and edges of the leaves, an effect often described by growers as “nutrient burn”.

To avoid this, many growers apply a basic rule: always use a slightly lower dose than recommended by the fertilizer manufacturer. In this way, overfeeding is prevented and a balanced uptake by the plant is ensured.

Environmental stress

Environmental factors are also key determinants in the appearance of dry leaves on cannabis plants. Temperature extremes, either intense heat or excessive cold, as well as low humidity levels, can accelerate water loss from leaves, causing them to dry out quickly. In addition, too much direct light, especially in poorly positioned indoor or outdoor crops exposed to the sun at peak hours, can cause light stress, drying and burning delicate leaves.

Most growers usually mitigate these risks by using fans, humidifiers or adjusting the height of lights in indoor crops. Constant observation of the environment allows conditions to be adapted quickly, keeping the plant in optimal conditions.

Pests and diseases

When pests or diseases appear, especially those caused by fungi such as downy mildew or insects such as spider mites, the plant experiences a drastic reduction in the circulation of nutrients and water to its leaves. This can lead to accelerated drying of leaf tissue. For example, a spider mite infestation is clearly seen by small white spots on the leaf, which eventually turn dry and brown.

To prevent these problems, many growers conduct periodic inspections to detect pests or diseases early. In addition, the application of preventive treatments with biological products such as trichoderma can strengthen the natural resistance of plants.

Strategies to help recover dry leaves

Adjustment of irrigation and fertilization

When dry leaves are already present, an immediate intervention is to correct water and nutrient management. Fertilizer is usually reduced for a short period and regular but moderate irrigation is implemented, ensuring that the substrate has proper aeration and drainage. For example, alternating irrigations with clean water helps to remove excess salts from the soil, facilitating faster recovery.

Improved environmental conditions

To facilitate the recovery of plants with dry leaves due to environmental stress,

growers stabilize the temperature in an ideal range between 20°C and 26°C and maintain a relative humidity close to 55%. If the damage is light-related, adjusting the distance between the lamp and the plant, or providing partial shade during peak outdoor solar radiation hours, can be an effective solution.

Pest and disease management and prevention

Once a pest or disease problem has been identified, the immediate solution is usually to apply specific biological products, following the manufacturer’s instructions. In addition, keeping pruning tools clean and avoiding direct contact between infected and healthy plants prevents the spread of the problem.

Prevention: the key to healthy leaves

Prevention is always simpler and more effective than correction. Implementing healthy practices such as proper fertilization, balanced irrigation and control of environmental conditions can prevent most of the problems that cause dry leaves. In addition, frequent checkups allow for early identification and treatment of any problems before they become significant problems.

In short, although the appearance of dry leaves may seem alarming at first, understanding their causes and applying appropriate preventive and corrective measures allows for a quick recovery of plant health. With constant attention and timely actions, maintaining a healthy and vigorous crop is perfectly achievable for growers.

For cannabis growers, caring for a plant is a process in which every detail counts. Detecting and correcting factors that cause dry leaves in time makes the difference between a crop that struggles to survive and one that grows vigorously. With proper management of irrigation, nutrients and environment, it is possible to prevent most of these problems and ensure that the plant thrives in the best conditions.

At Gorilla Grillz, quality is not an option, it is our standard.
